Committee Detail

Name:Village Cemetery Committee
Description:

The Victor Village Cemetery is located behind the Methodist Church on East Main Street, in the village of Victor. This pioneer cemetery is the final resting place for Victor’s early settlers, residents, and veterans of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, and Mexican War. The earliest burial occurred in 1810 and internments continued until 1949.

On June 11, 2007 the Town of Victor formed the Victor Village Cemetery Committee. One week later, on June 18th, the Village Board of Trustees also approved the establishment of this committee. The committee was charged with the preservation and restoration of this historic cemetery.

Since the earliest burial, that of William Loofborough, occurred in 1810, on May 22nd of 2010 we held a Bicentennial ceremony to commemorate this event. Approximately 100 people attended the event, including DAR members from across the state as well as Senator Nozzolio and Assemblyman Errigo. A costumed tour with actors portraying prominent Victor pioneers interred in the cemetery followed the ceremony. Dr. Preston Pierce, Ontario County Historian, was the keynote speaker. A local Civil War re-enactment group came in costume and fired their cannon as a finale to the event. The Canandaigua Chapter, NSDAR donated two burning bushes which were planted by the Beach vault garden and were dedicated by the NSDAR State representatives.

A memorial bench was also installed and dedicated. This bench had been donated by a friend of the cemetery.

Approximately 100 headstones were straightened and/or repaired during 2010. This brings a total of over 200 grave stones that have been straightened or repaired.

We thank the committee, Babette Huber and the Parks and Recreation Department for their hard work in helping to restore and preserve this historic site. In addition, we thank the Victor Town Board and the Village Board of Trustees for their continual encouragement and support.

Committee meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month at the Victor Village Hall at 7 p.m. ( unless otherwise noted ). Check the Town calendar for details.

An updated searchable index of all known people buried in the cemetery is available along with the inscriptions on their gravestones. This index has recently been updated with over 195 gravesites included that do not have markers. A special scanning was done to locate these graves and markers have been put on the graves.
