SEASONAL INFORMATION
WINTER
During winter months residents and businesses with meter pits should place markers at pit locations to avoid damage by snow plows. They must be kept clear of snow and debris for accessibility by Town personnel.
Please keep hydrants in front of your property clear and visibly marked so they are easily located in case of emergencies.
SUMMER WATER CONSERVATION CODE
To maintain the water quality, each year the system is flushed at the hydrants. The work generally ends by early to mid October. If you notice cloudy water for a day or two, do not be alarmed. The water is safe to drink. Feel free to contact the office to determine if that is indeed the cause of the condition.
During summer months, Town of Victor Water Conservation Code is in effect.
A) Properties with even numbered addresses may only water on even calendar days between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 7:00 AM, and again from 7:00 PM to 11:59 PM.
B) Property with odd numbered addresses may only water on odd calendar days between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 7:00 AM, and again from 7:00 PM to 11:59 PM.
IN NO EVENT SHALL ANY PROPERTY BE WATERED BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 7:00 AM AND 7:00 PM.
The forgoing restrictions do not apply to properties serviced by private water sources, such as well.
Please adhere to these restrictions and help us maintain a safe level in our water storage tanks. This code has been revised to simplify the requirements and help conserve water.
Tips for watering your lawn:
1. Don't drizzle.
A light sprinkling is the LEAST EFFECTIVE method of water. In fact, it can damage your lawn. A good soaking gets to the "root" of the problem by encouraging deep, solid root growth.
2. Late evenings and early mornings are the best times to water. Watering during the heat of day can actually harm your lawn. "Burn" damage occurs when hot sunlight hits water droplets that cling to leaves.
3. Water only when your lawn needs it. You don't have to water on a set schedule. Water only when the grass or plants show signs of needing it. To test whether or not your lawn needs a soaking, step on the grass. It is springs back up, you don't need to water. If it stays flat, it's time to water again.
Private Irrigation Systems
As more and more irrigation systems are being installed, it is important that property owners be aware of the State and Town regulations regarding these systems.
These stipulations are designed to protect the public from the introduction of any contaminants (e.g., fertilizer) into the municipal water system by installing a "backflow prevention device." These devices must be tested annually with the results sent to the Water Department.
If you are considering installation of an irrigation system, please contact the Water Department for an explanation of the requirements, which include submission of plans certified by a professional engineer. (Some contractors are not familiar with these requirements.)
Also, during installation it is important to locate sprinkler heads away from the road and outside Town easements, to avoid contact with plow trucks during the winter.
If you have an irrigation system currently in place, you should be aware that the same code requirements apply, including testing and reporting annually.
In the interest of public health, we would be glad to assist you in complying with this important safeguard. Please call Ken Wilson at the Town Water Department offices on Rawson Road at 924-3126.
